The Mississippi Gospel Music Awards and the Jackson Music Awards will be held back-to-back on July 28 and 29 at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson, MS and will be hosted by Alice Marie of WJMI and Rob J, WKXI. These annual events have been conducted for over 35 years will recognize the accomplishments of outstanding Mississippi recording artist in the R&B and Gospel genre. Jesse Thompson, president and founder of the awards show says Mississippi is considered the birthplace of music

 “So much music originated out of Mississippi,” he said. Thompson cites the likes of Muddy Waters, Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Robert Johnson, know as the “father of music” who are all from Mississippi. “It is important that we celebrate our music and encourage up and coming artist”, said Thomson. “Our music awards shows are unique because we focus on local talent and artist that have become national stars. He says though the efforts of labels like Malaco Records, the American Blues Network and radio stations in the South, Southern Soul artist are breaking out and taking their music on the road. “We want to give the younger generation a platform to record, play and sing Gospel and R&B music, “he said. “This kind of music makes a statement that will never die”.
The Gospel Awards event will recognize 28 different categories and will be hosted by Harvey Watkins and Stan Jones. Gospel legend honorees will include the Trumpetts, the Gospel Carriers, the Angeletts and the Fantastic Violinaires.
