When I first heard Waffle House was coming to L.A., I had to go warn Roscoe’s that there was some new competition coming into town! But it wasn’t a 24 Hour dinner turning up at Los Globos in Silverlake on Thursday August 25th. Performances from southern underground emcees Uno the activist from Atlanta, South Florida’s J-$tash, Swaghollywood, and Ca$hy, along with IDK Jeffery from Memphis, and Tris J of Chicago.
The event was presented by Stelloco along with TeamBackwood, Balcony Lifestyle, and P A L M.
Tris J was the first performer of the night to hit the stage. Having No prior knowledge of his work I found his set to be decent. His vocals are a bit similar to that of Left Brain of Odd Future.
Dressed in an airbrush hoodie and sweats looking like Martin Lawrence doing a boxing comedy Ca$hy, gave a rumbling performance. I’ve been following him and his vintage mob movement since 2013. I dig dudes swag and definitely see him as an artist with a lot of potential.
Next Swaghollywood took the stage with great energy. I’m especially a fan of his single “Monday” which will be featured on Palm of P A L M Vol. 6 which is dropping soon.
The following performer to hit the stage was East Memphis’ IDK Jeffery. I had previously seen him spit alongside Xavier Wulf, Chris Travis, TA$$, and Black Smurf back in April. His most recent mixtape The Jeffery EP V is a strong effort and resonates as a southern take on the Marshall Mathers LP.
Although I didn’t catch the sets from J-$tash and Uno the Activist, attendees told me they electrified the room. I’m sure Uno’s underground smash “What” featuring Playboi Carti.
All in all, Waffle House made for a dope Thursday evening. For the FTP hat rocking and Backwood smoking crowd, shows like this have become somewhat of a communal gathering. Big ups to Stelloco, Balcony Lifestyle, and Team Backwood for this opportunity.
