This June, Top Dawg Entertainment’s songstress SZA released her debut album Ctrl. If you were not a fan of hers prior to this (or at least not a big fan), this is the project that will convert you into one! With three singles thus far being “Drew Barrymore,” “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott and “Broken Blocks,” Ctrl is already promises quality from the jump. There’s more features from Kendrick Lamar, James Fauntleroy, and Isaiah Rashad.

Ctrl is a mostly R&B album with Neo-Soul and indie rock influences. I really like SZA’s playful voice and wordplay all throughout the record. By far my favorite song is “Doves in the Wind” with Kendrick Lamar. It’s the perfect track to just lay back, smoke, and vibe, with your girl to! “Prom” is quite upbeat in tempo and with nice electronic synths. I also really dug the following track “The Weekend.”

When it’s all said and Ctrl is an exceptional album. I’m curious to hear what SZA will come with next. The only thing the album was missing was a duet with Frank Ocean. 2017 has been a big year for TDE, and I’m looking forward to releases from their other power players. Ctrl presses in at 4/5 PALMs!
