The Midnight Train to Gladys Knight Highway

In a move that many feel is long overdue, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed Senate Resolution 441, which renamed State Route 9 from Peachtree Street to 14th Street “Gladys Knight Highway.” The route rightfully passes by the “Empress of Soul’s” legendary Chicken and Waffles restaurant. In 1997, Knight together with her son, Shanga Hankerson, developed Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles*, which has two locations in Atlanta and one in Lithonia, Ga.

Knight is an Atlanta-born recording artist, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, humanitarian and author. She and the Pips boast Grammy Awards, membership into the Grammy® Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame® as well as a numerous awards in recognition of a career spanning over 60 years that’s still going strong.
