It’s hard to place a finger on what would make Toro Y Moi’s new record What For a lame. Overall it’s the fact that when compared to his last album Anything in Return, it comes up short in many aspects. It takes on a late 60s/early 70s sound similar to that which Toro had on Underneath the Pine. Most of the songs on this album have the same dull daydreamy feel to them. There are a lot of flavorful guitar chords all throughout but the album at times What For is just plain boring. The best songs outside the two singles would be “The Flight” and “Run Baby Run.” However, The album is absolutely still worth listening to, but at the end of the day, far under par to Toro Y Moi’s past work.
