Johnny Gill: Still Reaching for the Sky

Johnny Gill is back with “This One’s For Me And You”, the third single from his Game Changer album. For Johnny, it’s just the way it’s supposed to be. “It’s been a lot of work,” says Gill, “but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” So how did the new single come together uniting with his New Edition brothers? “I had the song and the guys heard it and asked about getting on the song because it had that New Edition feel to it and I’m glad that we all collaborated and we could make it happen. It’s a New Edition classic.” So in addition to working the new single, what’s next for Johnny? “I’m staying really busy and my plans are to keep supporting the album and keep moving forward. Touring with New Edition has been a blessing, now we’re getting ready for the New Edition movie and were keeping it moving.” In a career that has included being a duet (with Stacy Lattisaw) a solo artist, a member of New Edition and LSG (Levert, Sweat and Gill) and now enjoying the benefits of being with New Edition and doing his own thing on his own J Skills label. I asked Johnny if he feels he has more to prove. “I’m so blessed, when I do a show and I look at the house and the fans have filled the seats; and how well the album is doing and at the end of the day, that’s the end all. I’m grateful ‘cause I can name all kinds of people that have a bunch of trophies (Grammy’s) sitting on their shelf but would do just about anything to have a career.” Now after more than three decades in the business, you would think he’s ready to kick back but no… “It’s been 32 years and I keep trying to reach higher levels and new heights. We set goals to stay focused and continue to push ourselves. When I look back on these 32 years and think about some of the things that I’ve done I can say it’s been mighty sweet. I’m still here working hard and have the desire to want more. I put it all in perspective; it doesn’t mean I’m greedy or that I’m not grateful it just means I wanna continue to keep working hard. They say sky’s the limit so I’m reaching for the sky.” It’s been a personal pleasure to witness and participate in Johnny’s amazing journey. That’s us hanging out below.
