WTUGMickey Johnson has joined Townsquare Media in Tuscaloosa, AL as the Brand Manager of 100,000-watt Urban AC blowtorch WTUG & Gospel WTSK (The Truth 790). He will also do afternoon drive on WTUG. The move reunites Johnson with Townsquare Tuscaloosa Market President David Dubose — they used to work together in Birmingham back in the day, where Johnson spent 11 years at the helm of Cox Media’s WBHJ (95.7 Jamz) until 2007. Johnson began his radio career as a Promotions Asst. at WHQT (Hot 105) in his hometown of Miami, and later went on to program WHJX (Hot 101.5)/Jacksonville before teaming up with Dubose to launch WBHJ in 1996. Johnson’s most recent radio post was a two-year stint as OM/PD of Radio One Urban WHHL (Hot 104) and Urban AC WFUN (Foxy 95.5)/St. Louis until the summer of 2011, when he returned home to Birmingham. Dubose commented, “I’m excited to have Mickey Johnson join our Tuscaloosa team. Mickey is a proven winner. Mickey is known for creating radio stations which are fun to listen to and radio stations with an amazing record of service to the community.” Johnson easily returned the compliment, saying, “I’m super excited to be working with David Dubose again. WTUG is heritage station that he and Kurt Johnson have entrusted in me to take to the next level™. Townsquare believes all of its stations should perform beyond expectations and I look forward to being a part of that.”
