Last month, the world got excited when Johnny Gill released the video for his new song, “This One’s for Me and You,” featuring his old band-mates from New Edition. Most people were confused and wondered why it was featuring the group and was not just a New Edition album. But fans may get what they want, especially since the New Edition biopic is currently in the works.

In an interview with Billboard, Gill discussed the possibility of the group reuniting for an album.

“I have put aside some songs already for New Edition,” Gill told Billboard. “We’re gonna try to have the album ready to go by the time the movie’s out, by 2017, when the movie drops. I’m making plans to start the recording process with that as well.”

Although there hasn’t been any casting news yet, according to Gill the roles have been set.

And who did Gill want to play him? None other than Denzel Washington, of course. But yeah, we knew that wasn’t going to happen.

“I was just disappointed that Denzel wasn’t available to play me,” he said. “Actually, I just want somebody who can capture the essence of me, and I think that’s important for all of us in the movie. That’s going to be the most important thing in telling this story, is that these actors capture the essence of who we are. We’re hands-on involved as well.”

The biopic will air on BET in 2017.
