Angela Bassett Joins “Black Panther” Cast

Angela Bassett will play Ramonda, the mother of the Black Panther, aka T’Challa, king and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda in “Black Panther”. In the comics, T’Challa’s mother dies giving birth to him, and Ramonda is his father’s second wife, who was kidnapped and abused for years, though no one knows how closely the film will hew to comic canon.

Chadwick Boseman introduced his version of Black Panther in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” and will star in the standalone film. Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira were earlier announced as members of the cast.
