emoji-icon-glossy-01-03-person-person-gesture-playing-record-player-72dpi-forPersonalUseOnlyThe Urban Buzz recently caught up with veteran radio, mixshow host and record executive, Thomas Lytle. To be honest, I didn’t know about his passion for mixing and his history in radio.

Thomas broke it down for me, ” I appeared on the radio Mixshow scene in 1984 at WOWI-Norfolk when PD Tony Gray hired me and John Robinson (RIP). John followed Tony to New York as I had PD aspirations, which came about when I took over the PD helm at 100kw “Power 94” WMYK-Virginia Beach, as then PD Dave Allen segued to WUSL-Philly “Power99” in 1987. I then hired “The Mix Scientist” Damon Williams from Norfolk State University, who is currently the EVP at Music Choice to take over my Mixshow duties,” Thomas shared.

“After my 21 year stint ended as VP Promotion at Island Def Jam, I resumed the craft that I loved; DJ/Music Production.”
So how did the MLK Holiday Mix come about?

“When WBLS-New York PD Skip Dillard put me in holiday Mixshow rotation, I noticed that during the MLK Holiday, simply playing the same speeches over record instrumentals didn’t give Dr. King the respect his legacy deserved. So I created this special program/mix ‘The Revolutionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’ out of love for Dr. King and my favorite childhood radio station, ‘the World’s Best Looking Sound’ WBLS. But due to recent executive changes, this mix didn’t make this year’s cut. I’m appreciative that The Urban Buzz will share this ‘Docu-Mix’ just in time for Black History Month”.

This “Docu-Mix” features rarely heard speeches and interviews from Dr. King set to music by Stevie Wonder, Eric B & Rakim, Sounds of Blackness, Big Daddy Kane, James Brown, Soul ll Soul and more.
