Congratulations to NBPC’s 2013Radio Champion award recipient Gary Young, who while accepting his award also announced his retirement from radio effective December 22, 2013. His 35+ year radio journey has taken him from major Midwest markets including Chicago and Detroit to D.C., Philadelphia, Savannah and some points in between. Gary will grace the airwaves at Atlanta’s WALR (Kiss 104.1) this week to concluding his tenure behind the mic.  As you may recall, Gary underwent a kidney transplant in 2009 and since that time has worked tirelessly to raise awareness for the National Kidney Foundation.  He participates in their annual Kidney Walks and was named 2012 National Kidney Foundation Volunteer of the Year.  Gary, my friend, your voice will be missed but I know you will remain active and effective in and out of the industry.

I was honored to be included in a group recognized at the NBPC event by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed for our contributions to the entertainment industry.  I salute my fellow honorees  Gary Young(WALR), Arlinda Garrett(Coming Attractions Promotions)Allen Johnston(The Music Specialist), Janice Burley-Black(Motown), Dr. Love(WIGO), Michael Soul(Davis Broadcasting), DJ Fresh(WHWT), Derrick Harper(Radio One), Teddy Austin(Warner Brothers)and Minnesota Fatz(Clear Channel).
