102.3 Radio Free KJLH kicked off 2014 by giving it’s listeners a chance to win the ultimate cultural experience of a lifetime. The KJLH South African Treasure Hunt challenged listeners to hunt for specific items relative to the history, heritage and culture of South Africa. Each day, listeners heard the item of the day and were encouraged to  seek them and after the entire list was announced, they were invited to a special live broadcast event. At the live broadcast, listeners presented their items. Those who had the complete list of items were qualified to enter the grand prize drawing for a trip for two to South Africa for the KJLH South Africa Jazz Tour.

The KJLH South Africa Jazz Tour was created and organzied by the station. It is a tour of South Africa set against a backdrop of music, culture and lifestyle. Travellers will visit Johannesburg, Soweto, go on Safari in the Pilanesburg National Park. They will visit Capetown where they will see Robben Island – the island that imprisoned Nelson Mandela for 18 of his 27 years. Also in Capetown they will attend the Capetown International Jazz Festival which features five stages of live music including performances by Erykah Badu, Kirk Whalum, Grammy Award Winners Snarky Puppy and Lalah Hathaway and a host of artists from all over the continent. They will enjoy the wine country of South Africa, as well as the cuisine of this great nation. The Jazz Safari is of note during the KJLH South African Jazz Tour. Here, the travellers go into one of the townships, visiting a musician’s home. A home cooked meal is served while the musician plays a set of jazz just for the group. It is the ultimate experience.

On January 31, after listening to the station all month for the required items, hundreds gathered at a live broadcast event. The excitement was electric as listeners told their story of how they obtained the itmes. Some listeners even reached out to South Africa to purchase items and have them sent to the US just for this event. The event was visited by Unathi Msengana, a South Africa celebrity who is a air personality on the mroning show of Metro FM – South Africa’s largest and most popular radio station(urban), she is also a judge on Idols South Africa (yes, South Africa’s version of the storied TV music series), she is also an accomplished recording artist. She was in town for the Grammy Awards and stopped by to visit her friends at KJLH Radio.

The event even attracted a special guest as KJLH owner Stevie Wonder came to do the Grand Prize Drawing. Ms. Delisa Parker was chosen much to her excitement. And when she was reminded that she could take a guest, she turned and chose a fellow contestant – a woman she had just met – to be her travel mate. It was an awesome display of benevolence.

The KJLH South Africa Treasure Hunt was an exciting event. And it gave one lucky listener a dream come true. A trip to South Africa !!!!
