This spring there hasn’t been too many projects that have caught my attention. Why? Well I don’t even know. But I got a hold of Lakewood, CA based up and coming rapper A$ton Matthews’ mixtape 3:16.

A$ton Matthews has came a long way since emerging on to the scene with his mixtape Versace Rag. He’s had the honor of touring with the likes of A$AP Ferg and Flatbush Zombies. After hearing a number of tracks and watching a couple videos, I was more than ready to hear a full length project from the homie.

3:16 isn’t bad at all. It has lots of features from lots of dope artists including A$AP Ferg, 100s, Joey Fatts, Bodega Bamz, Flatbush Zombies, Action Bronson, Ab-Soul, Marz Lovejoy, and Vince Staples. 3:16 is an interesting blend of trap and west coast inspired sounds. A$ton isn’t the most lyrical of rappers however, but still manages to put together a solid project. The hooks on this mixtape aren’t the best I’ve ever heard however. The highlights on the project would have to be “Latino Heat Part 2” (Feat. Bodega Bamz) and “Fiji.” Joey Fatts really does his thing on Perico. I could really see “Lullaby” (Feat. A$AP Ferg) is definitely a potential banger.

What I liked about 3:16 was the balance of east coast and west coast features and the trap energy. What I didn’t like is how similar a lot of the songs sound. It’s a solid project and if you’re interested in hearing a new rapper out of the A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q type of crowd, then make sure you download it. 3:16 scores a 3/5 flies.
