LETOYA LUCKETTFormer Destiny’s Child member and Grammy® winning singer/actress LeToya Luckett hasn’t pumped her brakes since VH1 (finally) pulled the plug on “Single Ladies” by signing on to star in a sequel to the 2002 film“Drumline.”

VH1 recently announced the cast of the new original movie, Drumline: A New Beat. Nick (Mr. Get-A-Check) Cannon has a (two check) dual role onscreen and as an executive producer. The project also includes Leonard Roberts, who starred as Sean Taylor in the original film. Luckett plays Dr. Nia Phillips, “an intelligent, and determined dean at the “fictional university” who also has former romantic ties to Taylor. (Is that a shade of Cougartown” or a ”Criminal Mind?”)

QUESTLOVE VHI LOGONick CannonDrumline: A New Beat” will channel the original film with an updated female presence of life at a fictional New Orleans university, not the original Atlanta A & T. The original “Drumline” was based loosely on a true story about metro Atlanta’s Southwest DeKalb High Institute and the experience of Grammy-winning record producer Dallas Austin.

In a statement, Cannon said, “Drumline” was not just a successful film; it was a cultural happening.” As a producer, my thought was, ‘How do we create an updated version that would translate to today’s audience and still feel fresh and original?” VH1 is the perfect network to partner with on this modernized take on what is considered a unique and classic film experience.” The film is scheduled for a late fall 2014 premiere.

HBO logoMs. Luckett’s recording career and new recording project due out earlier this year, has clearly taken a back seat to her acting career. She’s also a cast member of the new HBO series “Ballers” with co-star and executive producer Dwayne ”The Rock” Johnson. The show follow the lives of former and current football players. (Hasn’t that show been on TV for the past eight seasons titled “The Game?”….just asking)
