LutherLast Tuesday, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly (and finally) unveiled a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the late Luther Vandross. The star was unveiled at 1717 Vine Street overlooking the recording industry’s iconic building Capitol Records Tower.

Leron Gubler, President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and emcee of the ceremonies, saying, “We are honored to hold this dedication for a very special performer whose music will resonate for all time.” Gubler was joined by Grammy Award Winners Nile Rodgers and Marcus Miller who helped unveil the star for Vandross in the category of Recording. Accepting the star on behalf of the family was Luther’s niece Seveda Williams and childhood “bestie” and longtime collaborator Alfonso “Fonzi” Thornton who adds, “I am very proud to be one of the movers behind finally getting Luther’s star. We were friends and musical collaborators since I joined his first group the Shades of Jade in the 60’s at the age of fourteen. Even then, he was a visionary, being a songwriter vocal arranger and producer. I knew back then his unique vocal ability was destined for hit records and to touch millions. What an honor to stand with the Vandross family on his behalf.”
Luthers star with pic (2)There aren’t enough words to describe the depth of Luther’s talent, his indelible mark on music overall(not just R&B), his effortless vocal ability or the sensitive soul whose songs made it cool to love and be in love, remains a consistent presence in the spirit of Luther fans worldwide. While Luther was recently “honored” by Hollywood, I am sure, we can all stand and agree that it is, we were honored and blessed for so many years to be recipients of his monumental gifts.
