Today you can’t say west coast hip-hop without mentioning Black Hippy. The south central Los Angeles based crew has been putting out classic projects for a while now including Good Kid M.A.A.D. City from Kendrick Lamar back in 2012 (which should’ve won a Grammy, but didn’t because blah blah blah… whatever). Anyway, our boys from TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) have blessed us with a brand new album from Schoolboy Q called Oxymoron. Now prior to listening to this album, I did not call myself a Schoolboy Q fan in any way. I just wasn’t in to his cocky attitude and the fact that he dissed Blu (one of my favorite emcees), on twitter just made me find him annoying. But after hearing a couple hit songs from him from previous projects, I figured that I’d give Oxymoron a chance. I’m glad I did. This was a very solid project. It had nice beats that went hard with tons of energy. The single “Collard Greens” featuring Kendrick Lamar is definitely a banger to get the party started. Often I don’t care for opening tracks but, this time “Gangsta” had great kickoff energy. Mike WiLL Made-It definitely did his thing on “What They Want (Feat. 2 Chainz).” The song “Hell of a Night” is very reminiscent of something off of Live.Love.A$AP with it’s echo-ish track. But you can’t mention this album without mentioning the anthem “Man of the Year.” Overall even though Schoolboy Q isn’t the most lyrical rapper, and does not have the best punchlines in the world, I enjoyed Oxymoron. 4/5 flies.

Oxymoron is available on in stores and on iTunes!
